PUBLISHED ARTICLE: Moving through organizational change together

Making an organization more equitable and inclusive is a process that goes beyond just agreeing with each other that ‘discrimination is bad’. With racial injustice, and therefore diversity in the workplace, being such a prevalent issue, it makes sense that the steps an organization takes to overcome these problems fall under scrutiny. Instead of putting emphasis on how we are different, there needs to be a focus on the work that brings everyone together. Organizations need to take action and encourage people to work together on a shared issue in order to overcome their differences.

In episode five of season two, Tim and Tuesday venture into the heart of their change work: equity. How do we distribute power and wealth? How do we relate across lines of race, class, and gender, and how do we keep these considerations on the table in all of our work and in our working relationships?

PODCAST EPISODE: ON SPINNING PLATES AND PRESERVING HEART IN A BUSY LIFE AND WORLDIn episode three of season two, Tim and Tuesday explore the often talked-about, always sought-for, and ultimately elusive ideal of balance. In our journeys to reach ‘success’ — to have the greatest possible impact for a better tomorrow — what can we bring to our daily life to protect and renew our energies today?

PODCAST EPISODE: TACTICS TO KEEP CALM AND NOT-PANIC IN THE FACE OF BIG CHANGE

In episode seventeen, Tim and Tuesday talk about the difference between being clear and having a feeling of clarity—even through confusion. How can we train ourselves to stay open and keep moving forward in rooms electric with uncertainty? What can we do to ensure our energy as leaders is a renewable resource?

BLOG POST: More voices, more equity: NYC’s new practice David Nish and Cheryl Beamon of New York City’s Administration for Children’s Services Workforce Institute tell the story of how they’re designing a work environment to bring more voices forward. How can people-centred organizations shift their culture, focusing on the innate strengths and compassion of their people in new ways? If advocates connect with each other more, might they be able to work in a way that would bring true equity and social change?

BLOG POST: The slow downBut, friends, I’ve been tired. Very, very tired. On the edge of burnout-tired. The work is good. I love the work. But this was a kind of tired that was settling deep in my bones, not solvable by a good night of sleep or even a week off.I had stopped hearing my own song — my own knowing and inner compass, so over-stimulated with new input and responsibility. Have you felt that feeling before?

BLOG POST: Advice for the new

You can’t just tell a human being at point A—or a group of human beings at point A—to go to point B. Change would be easy if all we needed was our pointer finger gesturing Go That Way, Over There. As emotional beings—often territorial, attached, irrational, defensive, and fear-led—facilitators need to help people be better together so they can reach a consensus on the persistent attraction and worthiness of moving together to point B.

ARTICLE: “Nourish: Transforming food in healthcare using systems innovation,”by Beth Hunter, Stephen Huddart & Peter Senge. This is a story about a collaborative initiative called Nourish that focuses on the potential leverage for change in hospital food systems. The interface between different systems is often neglected territory for systems change because managerial structures govern silos, not critical interfaces between them.
